The latest data released by the General Administration of Customs shows that in December 2023, China imported 11.464 million tons of coking coal, a year-on-year increase of 77.3% and a month-on-month increase of 15.5%.
In December, China’s coking coal imports were US$1.95 billion, a year-on-year increase of 59.8% and a month-on-month increase of 23.6%. Based on this, the average import price was estimated to be US$170.5/ton, a year-on-year decrease of US$18.7/ton, and a month-on-month increase of US$11.1/ton.
From January to December 2023, a total of 100 million tons of coking coal was imported, a year-on-year increase of 60.6%; the cumulative import volume was US$17.22 billion, a year-on-year increase of 15.1%.
In terms of anthracite coal, China imported 1.577 million tons of anthracite coal in December, a year-on-year increase of 52.0% and a month-on-month decrease of 5.6%.
The import volume was US$250 million, a year-on-year increase of 4.8% and a month-on-month increase of 2.1%. Based on this, the import unit price is estimated to be US$157.0/ton, a year-on-year decrease of US$70.9/ton, and a month-on-month increase of US$11.9/ton.
From January to December 2023, a total of 18.302 million tons of anthracite coal was imported, a year-on-year increase of 65.5%; the cumulative import volume was US$3.16 billion, a year-on-year increase of 34.5%.
