Vietnam’s Coal Imports in 2023 increase 60% YoY

Preliminary statistics released by Vietnam Customs on January 11 show that in 2023, Vietnam’s coal imports will increase significantly year-on-year, hitting a three-year high.

Data show that in 2023, Vietnam (including foreign-invested enterprises) coal imports will reach 51.1589 million tons, a 60% increase from 31.9739 million tons in 2022.

Data show that in December 2023, Vietnam’s coal imports were 4.8211 million tons, a significant increase of 78.12% from 2.7066 million tons in the same period last year, and a decrease of 3.2% from 4.9807 million tons in November. It fell again after two consecutive months of growth. .

In that month, Vietnam imported the most coal from Indonesia, which was 1.9634 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 86.1%, and a month-on-month increase of 3.69%; it imported 1.7208 million tons of coal from Australia, a year-on-year increase of 29.09%, and a month-on-month increase of 9.59%; it imported 292,400 tons of coal from Russia, A year-on-year increase of 90.62% and a month-on-month decrease of 59.93%.

In December, Vietnam’s coal imports were US$629 million, a year-on-year increase of 28.05% and a month-on-month decrease of 8.56%. In 2023, Vietnam’s cumulative coal imports will be US$7.17 billion, a slight decrease of 0.09% year-on-year.
