In December 2023, Indonesia’s seaborne coal exports increased again from the previous month, an increase of more than 20% compared with the same period last year.
Kpler ship tracking data shows that in December 2023, Indonesian coal exports were 48.346 million tons, an increase of 20.52% from 40.1158 million tons in the same period last year, and an increase of 6.13% from 45.5549 million tons in November.
In that month, Indonesian coal was mainly exported to Asia, with export volume of 46.083 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 16.62% and a month-on-month increase of 2.73%, accounting for 95.3% of Indonesia’s total coal exports that month.
In terms of export destinations, Indonesia exported the largest amount of coal to mainland China that month, which was 21.1931 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.1% and a month-on-month increase of 11.64%.
In December, Indonesia exported 8.509 million tons of coal to India, a year-on-year increase of 61.96%, and a month-on-month decrease of 10.44%; Indonesia exported 3.0172 million tons of coal to the Philippines, a year- on-year increase of 19.17%, and month-on-month decrease of 9.63%.
In that month, Indonesia exported 2.7616 million tons of coal to South Korea, a year-on-year increase of 19.11%, and a month-on-month increase of 29.35%; Indonesia exported 2.655 million tons of coal to Japan, a year -on-year decrease of 1.16%, and a month-on-month increase of 29.42%.
Data shows that throughout 2023, Indonesia exported a total of 512 million tons of seaborne coal, a year-on-year increase of 11.73%.
