Details of Chinese Coal Mine Accidents

On March 11, 2024, two safety accidents occurred in two coal mines in Shanxi, Anhui Province, resulting in the death of 12 people and the loss of 4 people. The aftermath is currently being carried out in an orderly manner. Frequent accidents have made the safety production situation in coal mines more severe and complex, and prevention and control continues to become more difficult.

The official WeChat “Yingshang Release” of the Propaganda Department of Yingshang County Party Committee, Fuyang City, Anhui Province issued a situation report early this morning. At 12:10 on March 11, a gas explosion occurred in the Xieqiao Coal Mine of Huainan Mining (Group), a subsidiary of Huaihe Energy Holding Group. There were 24 people directly involved in the area, and 22 people were rescued from the well. Seven of them died after rescue efforts failed, and the other people were in stable condition. Two people trapped underground are being rescued under the guidance of experts.

According to CCTV news reporters learned from the Propaganda Department of the Zhongyang County Party Committee in Shanxi Province, at 22:45 on March 11, an underground coal bunker collapse occurred at Taoyuan Xinlong Coal Co., Ltd. in Zhongyang County, Shanxi Province. Seven people were buried. A total of five miners were found during the search and rescue at 7:00 on the 12th. After being confirmed by on-site medical staff, all of them had no vital signs. Two people are missing and are under intense search and rescue.

Fenwei Coal Mine Production Capacity Database Data shows that Huaihe Energy Holding Group currently has 11 pairs of mines, all of which are in production, with an approved production capacity of 77.9 million tons per year. Among them: 8 pairs of mines in Anhui Province, with an approved production capacity of 54.9 million tons/year; 3 pairs of mines in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, with an approved production capacity of 23 million tons/year. The coal mine involved in the accident, Xieqiao Coal Mine, has an approved production capacity of 9.6 million tons/year, and the gas level is coal and gas outburst.

Fenwei Coal Mine Production Capacity Database data shows that there are currently 14 pairs of mines in production in Zhongyang County, Luliang City, Shanxi Province, with an approved production capacity of 17.4 million tons/year. Before the Xinlong Coal Mine accident, they were all Class B and Class C mines in normal production. Among them: 11 pairs of Class B coal mines, with an approved production capacity of 12.9 million tons/year; 3 pairs of Class C coal mines, with an approved production capacity of 4.5 million tons/year. Xinlong Coal Mine, the coal mine involved in the accident, has an approved production capacity of 1.5 million tons per year and a low gas level.

Two coal mine accidents occurred on the same day, making the safety production situation even more severe. Governments at all levels, work safety bureaus and coal enterprises will more strictly organize and carry out supervision of accident hazards, and rectify the identified problems and hazards within a time limit.

Huaihe Energy Group’s 54.9 million tons of high gas and coal and gas outburst mines and the 17.4 million tons of mines in production in Zhongyang County may face temporary suspension of production for rectification.
