Chinese Hydropower Down 5.6% in 2023

Cumulatively, from January to December 2023, the national hydropower generation was 1,140.9 billion kilowatt-hours, a year-on-year decrease of 5.6%, and the decline was 0.6 percentage points narrower than the previous 11 months.

Among them, the provinces with the largest power generation capacity include Sichuan, Yunnan, Hubei, Qinghai, and Guizhou.   From January to December, the hydropower generation capacity of Sichuan, Yunnan, Hubei, Qinghai, and Guizhou were 358.3 billion kWh, 289.8 billion kWh, 124.6 billion kWh, 37.8 billion kWh, and 36.5 billion kWh respectively, with year-on-year changes of -3.1%. , -5.2%, 5.8%, -6.4% and -36.7%.

In December, as it moved into the seasonal off-season, the national hydropower generation decreased for the fourth month in a row, reaching an eight-month low. It was also the fifth consecutive month of being higher than the same period last year, but the year-on-year increase continued to decrease.

The most recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics reveals that in December 2023, the country’s total hydropower generation capacity was 77.5 billion kilowatt-hours, showing a 2.5% increase compared to the previous year. The growth rate decreased by 2.9 percentage points from the previous month and dropped by 6.6% month-on-month.
