India Production Update
Data from India’s Ministry of Coal showed that in January, India’s total coal production increased month-on-month for the fourth consecutive month, setting a new high since the beginning of the fiscal year, with a year-on-year increase of more than 10%.
Data show that in January 2024, India’s coal production reached 99.73 million tons, an increase of 10.86% from 89.96 million tons in the same period last year, and an increase of 7.33% from 92.92 million tons in the previous month.
In that month, Coal India’s (CIL) coal output was 78.41 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 9.08%, and a month-on-month increase of 9.07%; Singari Ni Mining Company’s (SCCL) coal output was 6.64 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 3.35%, and a month-on-month increase of 2.63%. ; The output of self-owned coal mines and other coal was 14.68 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 30.95% and a slight month-on-month increase of 0.82%.
Since this fiscal year (April 2023-January 2024), India’s total coal production has been 784 million tons, an increase of 12.18% from 699 million tons in the same period last year. Among them, the output of Coal India was 610 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.07%; the coal output of New Garini Mining Company was 56.3 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 25.04%; the output of self-owned coal mines and other coal was 118 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 25.04% .
In terms of sales, in January, India’s total coal sales were 87.37 million tons, an increase of 6.52% from 82.02 million tons in the same period last year. Since the beginning of this fiscal year, cumulative coal sales have reached 798 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 10.82%. In that month, Coal India’s coal sales were 67.56 million tons, New Garini Mining Company’s coal sales were 6.21 million tons, and self-owned coal mines and other coal sales were 13.6 million tons.
Data show that in January, India supplied 72.18 million tons of coal to the power industry, an increase of 5.68% from 68.3 million tons in the same period last year. This fiscal year, a total of 665 million tons of coal were supplied to the power industry, a year-on-year increase of 8.5%.
India Imports Update
The latest data from the Indian Ports Association shows that in January 2024, coal imports at Indian state-owned ports increased slightly compared with the previous month, which was also higher than the same period last year.
Data show that in January, India’s 12 large state-operated ports imported a total of 16.815 million tons of coal, a year-on-year increase of 7.79% and a month-on-month increase of 0.96%. In that month, these 12 ports imported 11.1 million tons of thermal coal, a year-on-year increase of 12.08%, and a month-on-month increase of 9.25%; they imported 5.715 million tons of coking coal, a slight increase of 0.33% year-on-year, and a month-on-month decrease of 12.01%.
In January, Paradip Port on India’s eastern coast imported the most thermal coal, which was 4.866 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 21.71% and a month-on-month increase of 26.23%. In that month, Kolkata Port imported the most coking coal, which was 2.179 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 15.25% and a month-on-month decrease of 23.19%.
In the first 10 months of the 2023-24 fiscal year (April 2023-January 2024), India’s state-operated ports imported a total of 160 million tons of coal, an increase of 2.65% from 156 million tons in the same period last year. Among them, imported thermal coal was 106 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 1.37%; imported coking coal was 54.561 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 11.47%.
Data from the Indian Ports Association shows that in the first 10 months of this fiscal year, the total cargo dispatch volume of India’s 12 state-operated ports was 678 million tons, an increase of 4.75% from 647 million tons in the same period last year. India’s 12 state-owned ports mainly include Kolkata Port, Paradip Port, Visakhapatnam Port (Visakhapatnam), Ennore Port (Ennore), Chennai Port (Chennai), Tuticorin Port (Tuticorin), Cochin Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, JNPT and Kandla.
