Italian energy group Enel will decommission units 3 and 4 of its Fusina coal-fired power plant (600 MW) in Venice from 31 December onwards, it said on Tuesday.
A new combined cycle gas power plant with around 800 MW of capacity will replace the coal plant and be put into operation in August 2024, local media reported.
The closure of the Fusina plant’s last two units follows the decommissioning of units 1 and 2 (336 MW) at the end of 2021. The move is part of Enel’s plan to complete the country’s coal phase-out of coal by 2025.
Enel’s installed coal-powered capacity in Italy currently totals 4.72 GW distributed among three plants – Brindisi, Civitavecchia and Portoscuso.
