In the first half of 2024, coal mining enterprises in Kuzbass produced 102.8 million tonnes of coal, marking a 5.5% year-on-year decline, as reported by the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass. Coking coal production fell to 32.6 million tonnes, a 3.6% decrease, while thermal coal extraction dropped 6.4% to 70.2 million tonnes.
Open-pit mines saw an 8.2% decline to 67.1 million tonnes, while underground mining remained stable at 35.7 million tonnes. As of July 1, 2024, coal stocks in Kuzbass were 20.6 million tonnes, unchanged from the previous year.
Sanctions, halting operations, high rail tariffs, and limited railroad capacity pose significant threats to the production and export of Russian high-quality coal. In 2023, Kuzbass coal production decreased by 4.2% to 214.2 million tonnes compared to 2022.
